Loretto is a remote and picturesque city located in Marion County. Loretto's population is just over 700. It is named after the Sisters of Loretto, a congregation founded there in 1812 that takes its name from Loreto, Italy, said to be a one-time home of the Virgin Mary.

Loretto is best known as the home of the Maker's Mark Distillery. The farmland it's on was purchased by distiller Bill Samuels, Sr., in 1953. The distillery has been declared a National Historic Landmark and is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
